What a click records.
Clicks are counted at the redirect, the moment someone opens a short link. Nothing runs on the page the link points to. This is everything the redirect keeps.
Recorded with each click
- Time
- When the short link was opened.
- Referrer
- The host of the site the click came from, if the browser sends one. news.ycombinator.com
- Country
- Looked up from the IP address at the moment of the click. The IP address itself is not stored.
- Device
- Device type, operating system and browser, read from the user agent. Mobile · iOS · Safari
- UTM tags
- Campaign parameters, when the link carries them. utm_source · utm_medium · utm_campaign · utm_term · utm_content
Not recorded
- IP address
- Used for the country lookup, then discarded.
- Cookies
- A redirect sets no cookies and reads none.
- Scripts
- Nothing is added to the destination page.
Left out of the stats
- Known bots
- Crawlers and other known bots are not counted as clicks.
